Coffee & Connect – Cognitive Strengthening
Feb 8 @ 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm
Coffee & Connect - Cognitive Strengthening

This training is for healthcare professionals who work in the medical and behavioral health fields as well as those who are called upon to respond to emergencies and disasters. We will define and differentiate organizational and individual wellness and describe the types of behavioral health concerns that we see related to healthcare providers, a unique population of helpers in our society. By examining the stress of helpers, such as compassion fatigue/secondary traumatic stress and burnout, we will begin to work on mitigating their negative effects. Participants will be guided to implementing interventions for themselves and practice those tools that are part of a cognitive strengthening process, to help increase their own well-being.

Attendees will receive 1.5 contact hours.*

This event is free for PSNA members and non-members.

About the presenter: April Naturale, PhD is a traumatic stress specialist with an extensive history as a health/mental health care administrator and clinician specializing in responses to traumatic events. Her dissertation focused on Secondary Traumatic Stress in disaster responders, a subject she continues to study. Dr. Naturale led Project Liberty, the NY mental health response to the 9/11 World Trade Center disaster and later served as the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Disaster Technical Assistance Center Project Director. Dr. Naturale was the architect of and helped implement the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing behavioral health response.

In 2004, Dr. Naturale helped launch the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and in 2011, the Disaster Distress Helpline. Over the past 20 years she has provided disaster and traumatic stress response training and consultation throughout the U.S. and internationally. From 2013-2020, Dr. Naturale has worked with the Dept of Justice/Office for Victims of Crime as a program and needs assessment consultant for the San Bernardino terror attack, the Las Vegas Harvest Festival, Pulse Nightclub, Parkland, Thousand Oaks, Pittsburgh Tree of Life, Poway Synagogue, Virginia Beach, El Paso and Highland Ranch shooting incidents and the TN Christmas Day bombing. She has trained Psychologists in the Ukraine Military Service, Humanitarian Aid workers for the European Union and recently helped launch the new European Centre of Expertise for Victims of Terrorism.

Currently, Dr. Naturale is the Interim Executive Director for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline working to move the effort forward as the network expands and works more closely with each of the states and crisis centers dedicated to suicide prevention.  She has also recently been appointed the U.S. Department of Justice team of nine subject matter experts to aid in a review of the law enforcement response to the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school shooting.

We all have that one person. The one who annoys us who we find it challenging to work with. Sure, we smile and try to be nice, but wouldn’t it be better to find a more effective way of dealing with him or her? More than that, once we learn more about our own personality and then what makes others tick, we have valuable information to better navigate the workplace. And, bonus! This can also be applied to your personal relationships as well.

This session will explore characteristics that define artificial intelligence (AI) and will discuss implications of AI in nursing practice. By the end of this session, participants will be able to describe three artificial intelligence technologies (AI) and their associated characteristics and identify two ways that AI will impact nurse leaders and clinicians in the delivery of health care.

9/26/23, 12:00 PM Nursing Leadership and its Connection to the Current Staffing Crisis | Denise Hammel MSN, RN, CLSSBB, CPHQ, XcellenceFirst

The literature affirms that over 50 hours a week leads to patient safety events and staff burnout. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated staff attrition, leading many organizations to ask staff to work overtime. Compounding the hours in overtime, many organizations do not utilize firm boundaries to ensure that staff maintain appropriate work hours and avoid staff exhaustion and patient harm. This presentation will feature an interactive discussion about when to hit the breaks on work hours and determine practical alternative approaches to meet the needs of your unit.

10/24/23, 3:30 PM Using Innovation Strategy in your Organization: Transforming the Role of the Leader in Complex Organizations | Denise Hammel MSN, RN, CLSSBB, CPHQ, XcellenceFirst

Healthcare organizations are complex and sometimes chaotic systems that are difficult to manage. Yet, such environments provide a fertile foundation to create new solutions. Nurse leaders must use healthcare’s dynamic and complex nature to innovate and solve challenges. This session will explore Innovation Strategy, including the structures, relationships, leader styles, and approaches to create the desired end-state. Nurses will discover how to harness the power of their organization through practical improvement and innovative strategies.

11/28/23, 12:00 PM, Utilizing Data and Technology to Improve Nursing Practice | Heather Shirk, MSN, RN-BC, Wellspan Health

Using the PICOT framework as a guide, we will discuss how to incorporate data and leverage technology into Evidence-Based Nursing practice. ANA Webinar – The Practical Aspects of the Code of Ethics for Nurses (Free for ANA Members and Non-Members)
Apr 14 all-day

Why Ethics Matter: The Practical Aspects of the Code of Ethics for Nurses

This on-demand webinar will use a case-based analysis using an ethical decision-making framework that focuses on four critical areas: Moral awareness, moral motivation, moral judgement, and moral action.

Real-world cases will provide action-oriented approaches for ensuring you are:

  • Caring for all individuals and respecting human dignity
  • Protecting patient health and safety by challenging questionable practices
  • Promoting social justice and identifying racism in the profession
  • Supporting an ethical environment and a culture of excellence
  • Respecting your duty to self, versus the duty to others, when there is a considerable environmental risk

After viewing this webinar, you will have a stronger connection to these approaches so you can easily use them in your day-to-day nursing practice. Provisions in the Code of Ethics for Nurses and ANA Ethics position statements will be highlighted to illuminate how these concepts can be used practically.

Legislative Day @ Temple University Harrisburg / Harrisburg Capital Complex
May 1 @ 8:00 am – 2:30 pm

The Pennsylvania State Nurses Association (PSNA) will hold its annual Legislative Day on Monday, May 1, 2023 in Harrisburg. Nurses and students are invited to join us as we advocate for the profession and our patients in Pennsylvania. Click here to see all of PSNA’s legislative initiatives.

PSNA’s Legislative Day is an important and informative day for nurses in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, nurses are under-represented in our state’s legislature. Although we are the largest group of healthcare providers in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, only two members of the General Assembly are RNs. Therefore, it is our responsibility and privilege to share our knowledge and expertise with local officials.

Legislative Day will begin with refreshments and presentations from PSNA staff and Pennsylvania leaders at Temple University Harrisburg. Attendees will then walk to the Capital to conduct pre-assigned meetings with legislators. From there, we will reconvene as a group to greet and promote the Patient Safety Act to officials as they enter the Senate floor. Attendees will have lunch on their own and are invited to return to the Capital for a guided tour before ending the day.

CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. Registration closes Wednesday, April 19, 2023.

Cost

  • Free / PSNA members
  • $10 / Non-members
  • $5 / Non-licensed nursing students
