The Collaborative Nursing Network of NEPA will present “Opiate Crisis: Addiction to Recovery” on April 17. This event includes a buffet dinner. The event speaker is Dominic Vangarelli, M.A., CADC, ICADC, Geisinger, Vice President, Geisinger Marworth. Mr. Vangarelli has a 23-year-long career with Geisinger Marworth. He held positions including: primary counselor, counseling coordinator, director of counseling, and currently vice president of operations. Mr. Vangarelli is a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and has acquired International Certification in Addiction Treatment. Innovations: Best Practices in Ambulatory Care @ Hershey Country Club

This event is joint-provided by the Penn State Hershey Medical Center and PSNA. Ambulatory care environments have become central to health care improvement as team-based care and population health models are being implemented. This conference will highlight ambulatory best practices across the region. Particular emphasis on population-specific care and improving efficiencies through care transitions will be presented. Members of ambulatory care teams including providers and clinical staff as well as other healthcare professionals will benefit from attending. This event will be held at the Hershey Country Club.

At 28 years old, Matt Cavallo, MPH, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Seemingly overnight he went from a fully functioning, healthy man to someone who was numb from the waist down and unable to walk. His story of being diagnosed and overcoming the physical and emotional challenges associated with having a chronic disease and rehabilitation will be presented from the onset of symptoms, through the diagnosis to outpatient rehabilitation. This includes an anterior cervical fusion, challenges with prior-authorization for durable medical equipment (DME), the recovery process post-surgery and the emotional and physical toll that it took on him, his wife and their young family.

Registration is now open for “A 20-Hour Interdisciplinary Breastfeeding Management Course for the U.S.” This three-day event will be held from 8:30 am – 4:45 pm at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. Education will be led by Nikki Lee, RN, BSN, MS, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI, ANLC, CKC, Registered Lactation Consultant and Advanced Nurse Lactation Counselor. Nikki has worked with mothers and babies since 1975 in homes, birth centers, hospitals, and clinics. She is a lactation consultant, a childbirth educator, a craniosacral therapist, an infant massage instructor, a teacher, and a nurse. Nikki educates healthcare professionals and works with city and community agencies toward the goal of meeting Healthy People 2020 Breastfeeding Objectives for the U.S. Nikki represents the Philadelphia Department of Public Health on the Philadelphia Multi-Hospital BabyFriendly™ Taskforce. Program objectives: The participant will be able to: (1) assess breastfeeding and offer practical advice and encouragement in a variety of situations from pregnancy to employment; (2) teach a mother how to hand express; (3) facilitate establishment of a milk supply; (4) support adoptive nursing, multiples, and relactation; and (5) identify current lactation resources about medications and medical questions. The Pennsylvania State Nurses Association has approved this activity for 20.25 nursing contact hours (6.75 hours/day). PSNA is an accredited approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

The Pennsylvania State Nurses Association (PSNA) will host “Understanding of the Care of the LGBTQI  Patient” webinar on May 15 from 3 – 4:30 pm. This activity awards 1.5 CNE. The webinar presenter is Lorraine Bock, DNP, FNP-C, ENP-C, FAANP. Dr. Bock is the health center coordinator at Alder Health Services in Harrisburg. As a national speaker and healthcare provider, she has worked with the LGBTQI community for more than 15 years. Dr. Bock received her NP education at the University of Pennsylvania and earned her doctorate at Robert Morris University, Pittsburgh. She is dually boarded in family and emergency medicine. She is the immediate past president of the PA Coalition of Nurse Practitioners and has worked tirelessly to improve the practice environment for nurses and NPs in PA. Information for the webinar will be sent prior to the event.
